A Volkswagen Beetle based on the legendary Fender guitar is reportedly going from concept car to production vehicle.
Based on the concept Beetle launched at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the car looks set to be produced as a limited edition for music fans, says Car and Driver magazine.
The model presented in Frankfurt looked every inch a rock star, with a high-gloss black finish, red-framed windows, leather roof and chrome exterior finishings very reminiscent of the guitar and amplifier brand’s equipment.
Inside, the concept was even more eye-catching, with a pad on the dash made of the two-tone wood design pattern used on Fender guitars and an ‘instrument bar’ leaving passengers in no doubt that the vehicle wasn’t ordinary.
Sadly, Car and Driver reports that the subwoofer that was cleverly stashed away in the trunk, complete with vintage Fender grille, and the dashtop tube amp, won’t make it through to production.
The model could arrive before the end of the year, the site says.
Fender’s collaboration with Beetle hasn’t only led to a pretty design concept — it also earned the vehicle “car audio system of the year” from US website CNET for its exclusive Fender-developed sound system.
Volkswagen of America today announced the appointment of Robert Martell, 54, to the post of Vice President, Customer Experience for the company. Martell, a 25-year veteran of Volkswagen in both the US and Canada has served in a variety of increasingly responsible sales and dealer-interfacing positions in his tenure at Volkswagen.
“The Customer Experience position is one of the critical foundational elements to Volkswagen’s continued success here in the US market,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America and President, Volkswagen of America. “Having someone of the caliber of Robert ready to step into this post so quickly is a reflection of his capabilities, his strong relationships with our dealer network, and the growing bench strength within our company.” The Customer Experience organization was developed last year to determine and implement strategies and initiatives to support the customer experience in all business activities. This includes the integration and alignment of each customer interaction at both the dealership and VWoA corporate levels. The Volkswagen Academy, Customer Care, Customer Experience, and CRM/Loyalty functions report to Martell in his new post. Martell joined Volkswagen of Canada in 1986 as a district sales manager. Throughout his career he has held numerous positions in both sales operations and corporate functions, including a key role as General Manager of Dealer Relations, where he managed interactions between Volkswagen dealers and company leadership. He earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Saint Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.May 12

Take a look at this special on a 2012 Volkswagen Eos!
There are many routes to outstanding fuel efficiency, but it’s often diesel that’s chosen to demonstrate the highest mpg numbers and longest distances.
Mileage experts Helen and John Taylor achieved both, to become the world record holders for the longest distance driven on one tank of fuel, using a Volkswagen Passat TDI.
In driving from Houston, Texas to Sterling, Virginia, the Taylors drove 1,626 miles on a single 19.322 gallon fill of clean diesel. That equates to an average economy figure of 84.1 miles per gallon.
The Taylors were determined to make it a proper test too, rather than making it too easy. To that end, all the driving was done during the day in normal traffic conditions, rather than at night. The car was completely standard–a 140hp, 2.0-liter TDI, with a six-speed manual transmission–with 120 pounds of luggage in the trunk. The Taylors took turns at driving, and drove no more than 14 hours per day.
To ensure the test was conducted accurately, the speedometer was correctly calibrated for accuracy, recording parity at 20, 50 and 70 mph. The odometer was reading slightly under, so all figures were corrected to maintain accuracy.

The fuel used was verified by Senior Police Officer Daniel M. Rodriguez in Texas, then sealed and signed. Motel managers along the route also signed to confirm the seal was still intact, before it was finally signed for and removed by Deputy Sheriff Alonzo Perry at the end of the drive.
The Passat’s 84 mpg rating by the end of the drive is nearly double that rated by the EPA, with an official highway figure of 43 mpg. Many Volkswagen diesel drivers have found that the EPA figures for their cars are slightly pessimistic, and average economy figures of more than 40 mpg aren’t uncommon.
The Taylors’ endeavor has earned them a place in the record books, but we wouldn’t put it past the next record being in a Passat TDI too. The previous record-holder, at 1,526.6 miles, was also a Passat–the 1.6 TDI BlueMotion model, sold in Europe.

In recent years, diesel fuel has been more associated with huge 18-wheelers than family sedans, but that perception might be changing as gas prices rise and consumers seek fuel-efficient alternatives. According to data compiled by HybridCars.Com and Baum and Associates, U.S. sales of clean-diesel vehicles grew 35 percent in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year. That increased interest has paid dividends for established diesel-car manufacturers like Volkswagen, whose TDI Clean Diesel models are growing in popularity at VW dealerships.
U.S. diesel sales increased by 39.6 percent in March year-over-year, a number that Volkswagen TDI models outpaced with a 44.4-percent sales increase. Diesel powertrains accounted for 23.1 percent of all VW sales in March, helping the automaker cap off its best first quarter of U.S. sales since 1973. The Volkswagen Jetta TDI is the perennial best seller on the U.S. diesel market, returning up to 42 mpg on the highway.
“Consumers are really responding to the savings and convenience that comes from clean-diesel technology,” said Scott Dell, general sales manager of Canton, Connecticut Volkswagen dealer Mitchell Volkswagen. “Diesel fuel is an efficient and widely available alternative to gasoline, so it makes sense for a lot of our customers that still want the responsive ride expected from a Volkswagen but with even more miles per gallon.”
Volkswagen currently offers five models with a diesel engine in the United States, with the Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Golf, Passat and Touareg all featuring TDI options. A sixth model, the Beetle TDI Clean Diesel Coupe, will go on sale late this summer, bringing the iconic car’s distinctive style to the already diverse TDI lineup.
A clean-diesel engine isn’t the only alternative powertrain in the works for the Volkswagen Beetle, however. Volkswagen has created an all-electric two-seater convertible concept based on the Beetle’s styling. Dubbed the E-Bugster concept, the new roadster appeared with its top down for the first time at the Beijing Auto Show last month.
The topless E-Bugster revealed an interior with two sport seats separated by a body-color center tunnel that carries back to the contoured rear deck. Continuing that modern look is a chrome bezel surrounding the cabin and ambient white and blue interior lighting that glows when the vehicle’s start button is pushed. Powered by a 114-horsepower electric motor and a lithium-ion battery, the E-Bugster has a range of more than 100 miles and can be charged in a half an hour when power is tapped from a special DC source.
“There is no telling if an all-electric model similar to the E-Bugster will make it into production, but there are definitely fans out there that would like to enjoy an emissions-free Beetle,” added Dell. “As far as a drop-top Beetle is concerned, a gas-powered version is expected to debut at the LA Auto Show this November, so we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer.”
